Ryan graduated from Sauk Valley Community College in 2011 with an Associate in Science in Criminal Justice before transferring to the University of Illinois Springfield, where he earned his bachelor’s degree.
Following graduation, he began his career with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, working in the jail. He later served as a police officer with the Freeport Police Department before joining the Rock Falls Police Department in 2015. In December 2025, Ryan was appointed Chief of Police for the Rock Falls Police Department, where he currently leads a team of 19 officers.
What made you choose to attend Sauk Valley Community College?
Ryan chose to attend Sauk Valley Community College because he was fortunate to qualify for the Sauk Scholar Program, which made college affordable by providing tuition support. That allowed him to continue his education close to home while working toward his goals.
What’s your favorite memory from your time at the college?
Ryan’s favorite memory from his time at the college was being a member of the Cross Country team. He was also actively involved in Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) and had the opportunity to attend a PTK conference in Seattle, Washington. Through these experiences, Ryan built lasting friendships and connections that have stayed with him beyond his time at SVCC.
What was your biggest takeaway from your time here?
Ryan enjoyed making connections with fellow students and SVCC staff. SVCC is a great place to network and to explore different interests.
How did your experience at Sauk Valley Community College prepare you for your career or next steps?
Ryan’s experience at SVCC helped him learn more about law enforcement while building his confidence. Completing a 300-hour internship with the Rock Falls Police Department was especially valuable in preparing him for his future career.
What did you enjoy most about being part of the Sauk Valley Community College community?
Ryan enjoyed participating in athletics, PTK, and making lifelong friendships.

Enjoy your time at the school and get involved with any of the numerous organizations Sauk has to offer. The organizations can certainly help open doors and help show future employers that you are responsible.
