Brian Garza

Attending SVCC was transformative.

Brian Garza graduated from Sauk Valley Community College in 1989 with an Associate in Science degree before continuing his education at Western Illinois University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Marketing and a master’s degree in Sports Management.

Brian followed his older brother to SVCC while exploring his career options. Attending Sauk gave him the opportunity to discover his passion for business by taking a variety of courses in a supportive environment. He credits SVCC with providing the foundation he needed to grow personally, develop responsibility, and gain the confidence to pursue a successful career.

What made you choose to attend Sauk Valley Community College?

Self-awareness. I was aware that I wasn’t mature enough to go away to a university. I was uncertain of what to do with my future.

When did you attend SVCC?

I started at SVCC in 1987 after graduating from Sterling High School. I received my Associates in Science degree from SVCC in 1989.

What’s your favorite memory from your time at the college?

Meeting kids from other schools and having classes with them. Developing relationships and building life-long friendships with them.

What was your biggest takeaway from your time here?

SVCC is a stepping stone, it is a great first step to develop your mindset for college and become a forward thinker. SVCC was one of the best decisions I ever made. Going to Sauk saved me and gave me a chance to grow and take on responsibility.

How did your experience at Sauk Valley Community College prepare you for your career or next steps?

It helped me to become disciplined with my coursework and be strategic with my time. It helped me to push myself to do the best work I could.

What path did you take after SVCC?

I transferred to WIU, earned a Bachelors in Marketing and a Masters in Sports Management.

How long have you worked for the Chicago Cubs?

I started as a marketing intern in 1993 and became an Entry Level Representative in the ticket office and moved up the ladder. I am currently the Director of Ticket Services and oversees premier and season ticket holders.

What did you enjoy most about being part of the Sauk Valley Community College community?

I enjoyed being a member of a new community and started shaping my future.

What would you tell someone who’s considering attending Sauk Valley Community College?

Begin with making a list of what is most important to you, the pros and cons. If you don’t know what you want to be, it is the smartest move. Going to SVCC helps you figure out your future.

If you are unsure what you want to do with your life, don’t worry, you will figure it out. Don’t worry about the little stuff. Enjoy the experience and live in the moment.
